By GTK Feb 26, 2020 [![Walking frames](https://blog.gtk.com.au/hubfs/AdobeStock_303309642.jpg)](https://blog.gtk.com.au/rollator-vs-walking-frames-which-is-better) In today’s world, mobility devices provide a great service for people with trouble moving around. They restore the feeling of independence and security. Rollators and Walking frames are two very popular aids that can help. However, when it comes to making a choice, most people often find it difficult and a bit confusing. How do you know which one is best for you? Let’s find out. ## What are Walking Frames? [Walking frames](https://gtk.com.au/products/walking-frames/) are devices that provide additional support to people who have balance and stability issues. It is a great option for people who fall within this category as it helps to support body weight. Walking frames generally have four legs that maintain contact with the ground when you’re on the move. They require arm strength for operation. As such, people who suffer from weakness in the arms may not be able to use this device. Walking frames are suitable for indoor use or to cover short distances, as opposed to outdoor use or traveling long distances. ## What are Rollators? Rollators are typically more manoeuvrable than walking frames. These devices are a better option for individuals who have good balance but need extra support when walking. Rollators come in different sizes, types, and designs and one’s choice usually depends on his/her intentions or the most important features one is looking for. Although rollators are relatively durable and sturdy, they are lightweight and may come with three wheels or four wheels. These devices equally come with varying braking systems. The braking system could either consist of a push-down handle or bicycle-like levers. Most Rollators are foldable and this makes it easier to store in the house or even in the car. They also come with accessories like a basket or food tray to make it easier to transport items. ## What are the Key Differences Between Rollators and Walking Frames? The first step to deciding which mobility device is best for you is knowing the key differences that exist between them. The major difference is the way they are used. Walking frames are solid and come with four legs that have to be lifted in order to move forward. Rollators, on the other hand, are lightweight and come with four or three wheels that can be pushed. Walking frames are usually for people who need extra support when it comes to balance and stability. Its mode of use is quite simple but slow as well. The user lifts it, places it at arm’s length and then steps forward. On the other hand, rollators are more suited for people who already have good balance but just need extra support when walking. However, people who use rollators need to be able to operate the brakes properly. In terms of speed, rollators are better than walking frames as they move freely and naturally as opposed to the stop and start motion of walking frames. This device is also more manoeuvrable than a walking frame thanks to its front swivel wheels. ## What to Consider When Choosing Between Rollators and Walking Frames When it comes to choosing between rollators and walking frames or even choosing a specific brand, there are two important factors to consider. They include: 1. Upper body strength: This factor greatly determines which mobility device is best for you. Walkers or walking frames usually require more upper body strength since you will be constantly lifting the device. Thus, you should consider your upper body strength when trying to make a choice. 2. Portability: How portable is the mobility device in question? Will you be traveling constantly? This will help to determine the kind of mobility aid to choose from. For people who travel or move around frequently, it is advisable to choose a more portable and transportable device to prevent damage. Generally, rollators are a great choice for people who do not have a problem balancing but need to sit every now and then or carry items around. It is also perfect for those with limited arm strength who as a result may have a hard time lifting up a regular walker. On the other hand, Walking frames are perfect for individuals who tire out easily from standing, have issues with balance or just need firm immobile support to ease walking. ## Consult with an Expert at GTK When it comes to rollators, walking frames or just about any mobility device, we are your go-to company.
